The Salsa that we know today has its early origins from 1970s New York. The combined style of music that developed out of the Latin communities of the time helped develop the dance. The word Salsa meaning sauce helps us understand the dance is a mix. Developing movements and timings closely related to dances like Mambo, Cha Cha, Hustle and Swing.
LA: Salsa dancers engage in dramatic, acrobatic, and challenging moves.
New York: an elegant dance that’s very similar to Mambo. Unlike other forms of Salsa, which involve break steps on the 1 and 5 counts of music, New York Style Salsa has break steps on 2 and 6 counts
Miami/Cuban: Miami-Style and Cuban-Style Salsa are very similar. Miami Style is a little more refined than Cuban Style, and includes a tap between measures. Many movements of these types are used in Rueda de Casino.
Puerto Rican: this style can be danced on either the first or second beat of music, and is known for its highly technical footwork. Puerto Rican Style and New York Style Salsa are closely linked.
